Nature Mandala

Back-to-school time can be busy and chaotic, so we’d like to share this calming nature art activity that your child can do independently- nature mandalas. Nature mandalas are easy to create anywhere and can be worked on for minutes or hours. Learning about patterns through mandalas can also support your child’s developing brain!

A mandala is a geometric pattern, often in a circle, that, in some cultures, represents the universe. Examples of mandala patterns can be found all around us in nature (snowflakes, tree rings, flowers) and it is simple to make your own. The key to making a nature mandala is to find multiple items that look similar to one another so you can create a repeating pattern that radiates outward. A nature mandala can be made out of any items you find outside including rocks, sticks, leaves, and flowers!

While making your nature mandala, be sure to only use materials that follow the important 3D rule- dead, down, and detached.

Steps:

Step 1: Collect natural items

Step 2: Arrange in a circular pattern

Step 3: Step back and enjoy your masterpiece! In Thorne programs, we snap a photo of our artwork to share it with others. Create a nature mandala album on your phone to inspire your child to add to their portfolio of designs.

Step 4: Leave no trace and put all of your natural items back where they came from.

Educational Bonus: This activity feels like play AND it also benefits your child’s developing brain. Patterns help children make predictions because when they observe patterns they begin to understand what comes next. They also help children learn how to make logical connections, use reasoning skills, and even support early math education. Describe the pattern verbally to young children to help them recognize patterns in the world around them, “I see that your mandala has an orange leaf, yellow leaf, orange leaf, yellow leaf…” For an older child, you can use drawings or symbols to represent the pattern, such as ABAB or 1212.
