Trail Game for Kids in Boulder County: Duplication

A simple AND fun way to boost focus, memory, & nature awareness on your next family hike

At Thorne Nature Experience, we know hiking with kids can be both fun and challenging. Whether you're enrolled in one of our summer camps, nature preschool, or just exploring the outdoors in Boulder County, keeping kids engaged on the trail is key.

Duplication is one of our favorite nature games—it’s easy to set up and helps kids practice observation, memory, and attention to detail.

How to Play:

Step 1: One person starts by gathering different natural items (a rock, a pine cone, different kinds of leaves, etc.) and laying them out in a specific pattern on a bandana or a piece of paper.

Step 2: Give children a minute to observe and memorize all of the items and their placement on the bandana, then cover them up with another bandana or piece of paper.

Step 3: Challenge children to search for all of the items in nature and duplicate the original arrangement!

Adults can take the lead, or children can take turns setting patterns out for each other!
